Mattel Adds a Reproduction of Its First Black Doll to the Barbie Signature Collection

Thu Jun 16 2022

It has been 55 years since Mattel released its first-ever Black doll. She was a part of the Francie brand, a line of dolls marketed as “Barbie’s MODern Cousin.” Now, Mattel is reproducing the 1967 doll as a part of the Barbie Signature Collection, which features collector-grade Barbie dolls inspired by iconic and empowering women, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou, and Helen Keller.

To capture the essence of the original doll, Mattel revived the original doll form from the 1960s for her reproduction. The form includes bendable “clicky” legs, a twist ‘n turn waist, and rooted eyelashes. To embrace the ’60s vibes, the Francie doll is styled with a bob and bangs; a colorful, A-line dress with pink ruffles; pink gloves; and pink shoes. Collectors may recognize the outfit as No. 1207, “Floating In.”

The new doll comes in a retro-looking, pink, orange, and yellow window box that is designed to look like she is standing in front of a door. “Francie” is written across the front in green script.
